Determinations not to compete this proposed procurement were made because: The use of remotely sensed data products is commonplace in the wildland fire community. Instruments such as MODIS and VIIRS provide managers and fire behavior analysists with a wealth of near real-time information including approximate location of new fire starts, fire activity levels, rate and direction of spread, and the spatial extent of area burned. These satellite-based instruments are especially valuable in remote and roadless areas in Alaska where fires are typically monitored and mapped using aircraft. UAF GINA has been providing near-real-time, satellite-derived fire monitoring products to AFS since 2003. The products are valued by the AFS because they provided critical information on fire behavior several times per day, and cover the entire state.
